Dear Colleagues,
I would like to take this opportunity to share with you some important information prior to its public dissemination. The university has been the subject of a year-long NCAA investigation of our athletics program. While this situation presents some challenges, it has given us the opportunity of refocusing and rebuilding our athletics program. We have new leadership and a new commitment to our student athletes that embraces scholarship and personal growth above all else. The entire university administration is committed to this vision.
The NCAA has noted problems with West Georgia Athletics that span a number of years. Today the NCAA has found the University of West Georgia athletics program guilty of numerous major violations, which led 119 student-athletes to practice, compete, or receive financial aid or travel expenses while ineligible. The university admits and takes full responsibility for these findings.
The violations include provision of extra benefits, impermissible recruiting, unethical conduct, eligibility certification violations, non-compliance with degree requirements, failure to keep records of countable athletic related activities, failure to monitor travel and financial expenses, failure to provide adequate NCAA rules education and training, and lack of institutional control by University Advancement -- it is important to note that Athletics has reported to University Advancement for the past three decades, or longer. The university maintains that except for the extra benefits infraction, the other violations were not intentional but, rather, resulted from sloppiness, inattention, and lack of oversight. Those responsible for these violations are no longer employed by the university.
The penalties for these violations include a public reprimand and censure, four years probation, mandatory annual report and audit, vacation of all contests in which ineligible student-athletes competed, reductions in financial aid, recruiting limitations, a postseason ban, and a $2,500 financial penalty.
The university has taken numerous actions to mitigate these infractions and insure future compliance with NCAA legislation:
· hired a full time compliance officer and academic advisor, instituted mandatory academic advising programs for all student athletes, and increased number of tutors to 12
· appointed a new director of athletics with significant experience in coaching and administration
· broadened responsibilities of coaching staff to assist in enforcement procedures through rules education, commitment to compliance, and ongoing monitoring
· initiated mandatory rules and compliance sessions for all coaches, and instituted mandatory attendance for university staff at NCAA regional rules meetings
· appointed new head baseball coach who has led highly successful and compliant D-II programs
· initiated new academic intervention procedures for academic at-risk student athletes through the Office of Academic Affairs
· clarified internal policies to be consistent with NCAA guidelines.
In the past, athletics has not always enjoyed a collaborative relationship with the larger university community. This also will change. In the months ahead Coach Dickey and I will meet with various groups on campus to discuss changes in the athletics program, answer questions, and address any issues that may be of concern. Thanks for your attention.

Does this mean the football teams only win this past season won't count?
ReplyDeleteIndeed it does.
ReplyDeleteAs for the athletics department's relationship with the rest of campus changing, I doubt it. I still feel cheated every time I pay an athletics fee--I never go to games and don't care anything about athletics at UWG. It's supposed to be a place of learning primarily.
thats y im majoring n football
ReplyDeletewhy the fuck do we even bother with athletic teams in the first place? it's west georgia, who gives a shit about athletics? the school should be funding research or new departments like a law school or something. i seriously doubt anything will change. i can't wait to transfer out.it is embarassing to have to tell people i go to west ga.
ReplyDeleteI also think that we should focus more on academics, because that is what a University is there for...academic advancement. They spent all that money on the new stadium, when it could be put to better use - like paying the professors for the days that they work.
ReplyDeletethe new athletic complex cost 34 mill. you also have to add in the cost of incidentals/costs of operation.
ReplyDeleteI agree with the second and third Anonymouses (Anonymi?). I personally just do not believe that university-sponsored and -run athletics are any more necessary than they are interesting; that is, not at all.
ReplyDeleteIgnorance is a plague, and as many resources as we can pool to combat it are necessary.
Seems as if the High School mentality is still around in college. Sports before brains. It is a jockocracy that is fueled by beer and apathy. Good job at making the honest, knowledge seeking people who go (and went) to UWG look like D-bags.
ReplyDeleteSo since they fucked themselves, we should get an "athletic fee refund" right? that would make sense since they were cutting corners in the first place. Or at least tear down the multi-million dollar sports facilities that were put up and flatten it out and oh i dont know.... give us more parking. im glad i graduated and got the hell out of there before they started looking really bad!
ReplyDeleteWhy are the students being punished when the officals screwed the pooch? According to the NCAA site they didn't tell the students they couldn't play. So freshmen who doesn't really know the rules and just understands academic pro is for finacial aid is told by the coach to play, he will still play. Taking away the wins and banning post season is extreme. Fine those responsible and give it to the university (maybe to pay the proffesours) But don't punish the student athletes or the students as a whole.
ReplyDeletecome on, this school is a joke. all i got out of that message was we hired more people and we got lost money... time to raise tution. it's not like they are going to have a post season... does one win get you into the play offs now days? banning the one win too!?!? thats the last straw!
ReplyDeleteThe stadium was built entirely on a donation that was intended for a stadium and so the university couldn't spend it on anything academic. Just saying
ReplyDeleteanyone else notice "UWG FAIL" site has failed to update in months?
ReplyDeleteFail....
