Grammar fail at UWG.

I know it's been a while but user submissions have been at an all time low and I can't run around campus looking for FAILs. There isn't enough time in the day to get them all. SO don't forget YOU the reader keeps this blog alive by emailing your fail and a picture/screen shot of it to UWGFail@gmail.com.

Library Fail

User Submitted FAIL
"I'm excited to attend a school where FINDING THE LIBRARY is so challenging that they gave a prize to they guy who figured it out."

Below is from the Ingram Library Blog

Jason Nottingham was the first UWG student to find the temporary entrance to the library on Wednesday, September 29th.  As a prize, Jason was given a UWG mug, an orange construction cone-shaped stress reliever, and a flashlight. During Phase Two of the Library’s renovation, which will extend through the end of the 2010-11 academic year, the public will enter the building by way of this ground level entrance located near the Pafford Building.   Phase Two construction involves renovating the Library’s entire first floor and the east sections of the second and third floors.

ATHLETICS FAIL

The following is an email that was forwarded to us last night, written by UWG's Vice President of Advancement, Michael Ruffner. While the format isn't the same as our traditional posts, this is definitely one of the university's biggest fails in a long time and is worth a read.

Dear Colleagues,

I would like to take this opportunity to share with you some important information prior to its public dissemination. The university has been the subject of a year-long NCAA investigation of our athletics program.  While this situation presents some challenges, it has given us the opportunity of refocusing and rebuilding our athletics program. We have new leadership and a new commitment to our student athletes that embraces scholarship and personal growth above all else.  The entire university administration is committed to this vision.

The NCAA has noted problems with West Georgia Athletics that span a number of years.  Today the NCAA has found the University of West Georgia athletics program guilty of numerous major violations, which led 119 student-athletes to practice, compete, or receive financial aid or travel expenses while ineligible.  The university admits and takes full responsibility for these findings.

The violations include provision of extra benefits, impermissible recruiting, unethical conduct, eligibility certification violations, non-compliance with degree requirements, failure to keep records of countable athletic related activities, failure to monitor travel and financial expenses, failure to provide adequate NCAA rules education and training, and lack of institutional control by University Advancement -- it is important to note that Athletics has reported to University Advancement for the past three decades, or longer.  The university maintains that except for the extra benefits infraction, the other violations were not intentional but, rather, resulted from sloppiness, inattention, and lack of oversight.   Those responsible for these violations are no longer employed by the university.

The penalties for these violations include a public reprimand and censure, four years probation, mandatory annual report and audit, vacation of all contests in which ineligible student-athletes competed, reductions in financial aid, recruiting limitations, a postseason ban, and a $2,500 financial penalty.

The university has taken numerous actions to mitigate these infractions and insure future compliance with NCAA legislation:

·         hired a full time compliance officer and academic advisor, instituted mandatory academic advising programs for all student athletes, and increased number of tutors to 12

·         appointed a new director of athletics with significant experience in coaching and administration

·         broadened responsibilities of coaching staff to assist in enforcement procedures through rules education, commitment to compliance, and ongoing monitoring

·         initiated mandatory rules and compliance sessions for all coaches, and instituted mandatory attendance for university staff at NCAA regional rules meetings

·         appointed new head baseball coach who has led highly successful and compliant D-II programs

·         initiated new academic intervention procedures for academic at-risk student athletes through the Office of Academic Affairs

·         clarified internal policies to be consistent with NCAA guidelines.

In the past, athletics has not always enjoyed a collaborative relationship with the larger university community.  This also will change.  In the months ahead Coach Dickey and I will meet with various groups on campus to discuss changes in the athletics program, answer questions, and address any issues that may be of concern.  Thanks for your attention.

Michael

Normally I am a huge advocate for pole dancing, but sadly I don't think this was the university's intention.

Contract Fail

If you live in a dorm and want to check your contractual obligations online, according to UWG's Reslife page they can be viewed here. According to this page you are apparently contracted to nothing, meaning that if you're trying to get out of your dorm lease early, this may be your golden ticket.

Black People Win

Here at UWG Fail, we spend a lot of time citing the school's failures. So much time in fact, that we occasionally have to include a win to remind us that some good things actually do happen on our campus.
To see an entire race come together to sponsor an event in our own backyard is definitely a win.
Just as a warning though, if you're a commuter you'd better get to campus pretty early on November 10th, because if everyone involved in this shows up, parking's going to be more a of a bitch than usual.

Parking Fail

What should be a win quickly turns to failure, as UWG wastes our student fees on a hilariously misspelled sign for the new commuter lot last year.

Teacher Fail

"I took Spanish 1002 over the summer and all semester my teacher promised my class a study guide for the final as well as offered to give us a final review session on reading day. The week of the final, he sent this e-mail to my class because somebody had complained about him to the department head. Thanks to his unprofessional attitude and constant disrespect towards his students (which the complaint was about), I am now having to retake the same class. Thanks UWG for raising my tuition every semester and still not being able to provide competent teachers."

Rape Fail

"My boyfriend and I were walking out of Arbor View as he showed me a
sign and told me how ridiculous it was that people would remember the
9/11 crisis by rapping about it. Being the grammar and spelling nazi
that I am, I looked a little closer and proceeded to burst into serious
laughter. In the Campus Center Ballroom at 6:00 on September 24th,
there would be "Performances by the most Talented...raping." Yes, I
believe I'd remember the number 911 in case of Talented (with a capital
T) rape, too. Spelling is important, students of UWG."

Football Fail

Normally the Wolves losing is such an obvious Fail that we wouldn't touch it with a ten foot pole. However, this user submitted pic and bad ass crowd member say it too well to pass up as Valdosta breaks the Wolves whopping one game winning streak (which was their first win after an epic twenty-one game fail massacre).
I know tradition is important at UWG, so thanks Wolves for not letting us down.

Java City Fail

"I was running late for an exam today and figured that a delicious Java City Coffee could make my morning go better. As I briskly walked across campus, sipping my $2 beverage I noticed it was dripping from the bottom and onto my pants. I immediately shrugged it off and firmly re-tightened the lid to prevent further leakage and first and second degree burns.
Upon arrival, I sat the drink on a table and noticed my hands where covered in coffee. Naturally, like any caffeine addict, I carefully licked every drop from my hands and then looked down only to discover the coffee steadily pooling on the table.
I asked my teacher if I could be excused to return it, but he thought the exam was far more important for some reason and made me throw the rest away because I was making a mess.
Thank you Java city, for making my cup half empty this morning.
